Niagara Drag Strip 1961-1974 / CC Rider
« on: April 06, 2011, 06:55:51 PM »
I remember Bill Lindner's CC Rider as being one of the loudest drag race cars I've heard.  Why was this so?

When it comes to verifying historical information, I will always err on the side of caution.

Here you go folks.  Let's hear what you have to say!

Dyno Dean is a good guy.  I'd sure like to get my hands on the stuff he has.

ESPN2 and ESPN2HD to telecast 10-race season

GLENDORA, Calif. (March 7, 2011) — After much fanfare and success, the NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series enters its second season in 2011, beginning at the Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals, March 10-13.  The 10-race NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series will be featured on ESPN2 and ESPN2HD.

ESPN2 and ESPN2HD will televise 30-minute highlight shows of the racing action from all 10 NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Series events.  The shows will air on a tape delay basis and will recap the weekend’s events, including final elimination coverage of the 16-car fields.

In addition, ESPN International will telecast the events around the world through English-speaking affiliates.

The shows will be produced by ESPN, which has been producing NHRA programming since 2001.  Calling the action on the telecast will be veteran NHRA announcer Dave Rieff, who will be joined in the booth by race analyst Mike Dunn.

The formation of the NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series wouldn’t have been possible without the financial commitment of ProCare Rx and Get Screened America, which agreed to a multi-year commitment to fund the series.

Following the Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville (Fla.) Raceway, the schedule features stops at some of the biggest events on the circuit including Las Vegas (April 1-3), Houston (April 29-May 1), Atlanta (May 12-15), Englishtown (June 2-5), Bristol (June 17-19) and Norwalk (June 23-26).    The second half of the season will see the 250 mph machines race at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis, (Sept. 1-5),  the fall national event in Charlotte, N.C. (Sept. 15-18), and conclude with a return to Las Vegas (Oct. 27-30).

With body styles ranging from ’41 Willys to '53 Corvettes, ’57 Chevys to ’70 Cudas, and first-generation Camaros and Firebirds, to profiles as racy as the latest Dodge Viper, along with show-quality “themed paint jobs,” Pro Mods have been crowd pleasers at NHRA events for several years as an exhibition. With huge slicks at the rear and superchargers poking through the hoods, there’s no doubt that these cars are a whole lot more than souped-up classics.

ESPN2 is now available in nearly 100 million homes nationwide.

Headquartered in Glendora, Calif., NHRA is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2011.  As the primary sanctioning body for the sport of drag racing in the United States, NHRA presents 22 national events featuring the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and the NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series. NHRA provides competition opportunities for drivers of all levels in the NHRA Summit Racing Series and the NHRA Drags: Street Legal Style presented by AAA.  NHRA also offers the Jr. Drag Racing League for youth ages 8 to 17.   In addition, NHRA owns and operates five racing facilities: Gainesville Raceway in Florida; Atlanta Dragway in Georgia; National Trail Raceway in Ohio; Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis; and Auto Club Raceway at Pomona in Southern California. For more information, log on to, or visit the official NHRA pages on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

PMRA / Canadian NHRA Pro Modified teams preparing to head to Florida

Maier, Commisso, and Lang to race in upcoming NHRA Gatornationals

March 7, 2011 – Canada will be well-represented in the NHRA Get Screened American Pro Mod Series at the upcoming NHRA Gatornationals in Florida.
Ike Maier of Tottenham, Ontario, Raymond Commisso of Toronto, Ontario, and Ken Lang of Grand Pointe, Manitoba will all be making the trek to Gainesville for the second race in the 2011 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series tour.
The Pro Mod session at Gainesville will be the first of 10 such events at selected NHRA races this year.
“It should be interesting this year with the rules changes,” noted Maier, who will be driving his 1963 Corvette Pro Mod. “The most important change is the reduction in the blower drive, and a lot of teams will be struggling to get the right combination.”
In December of 2010, the NHRA modified the supercharger overdrive requirements which are now set at 14.5 percent from the previous 20 percent.
Other changes to the Pro Mod class, which the NHRA has now embraced after treating it as a exhibition class for several years, include automatic transmissions in the cars (with a 75-pound weight reduction), and the use of automated/electric/pneumatic shifting devices.
Commisso will be driving the ProCare RX 1968 Camaro, and former IHRA Pro Mod champion Lang will be in his 1953 Corvette-bodied Pro Mod.
The Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals will be held March 10-13, and will be the 43rd annual event at the northern Florida track. Qualifying sessions for the Pro Mod class are scheduled for Friday, March 11, and Saturday, March 12, with eliminations Sunday March 13.

IHRA / Immokalee Regional Raceway
« on: March 06, 2011, 08:45:16 PM »
If any drag racing fan is ever in the southwest part of Florida, Immokalee Regional Raceway is must!  It's an airport-based 1/8 mile racer's track, with very limited seating and one concession stand.  However, don't let the lack of amenities scare you, as IRR is a super-well-prepared track where the cars just hook up and go.  Bill Nojaim, Denny Gaughan and I have been over to IRR several times and not only is track prep great, but the facility is very well run.  Ralph Hester and crew run a very tight ship.  For example, Denny, a friend of his and I attended the IHRA Pro-Am race on Super Bowl Sunday.  We met in Immokalee for breakfast at 8:00 AM, headed for the track, (a short hop) walked around, watched the time trials/qualifying and eliminations started about 11:00.  Great racing and the race finished before 3:00 PM and we headed home, (Denny & his friend back to Avon Park in Central Fl).  We made it back home, (me to Miami) with plenty of time to spare before the game started.

All in all, a great track to visit.  If you are in that part of Florida, don't miss it!

Bob is also from Niagara Falls and I have known him for most of our lives.  I say "our" because we were both born in St Marys Hospital on 6th Street a few hours apart, Bob is the "older," lol.  Bob was at Niagara at the beginning and will be recognized as such.
Welcome aboard Bob!

Yep, been living in South Florida for the better part of 35 years.  Hotter n hell here in the summer, but it ain't cold in the winter.  I still love drag racing as much as I did when I went to my first race, at the Dunkirk NY airport.  Back then, (1959 or 60) one had to roll over air tubes to start/stop the timers.  Imagine that!  Nowadays, I love drag racing just as much as I did back then.  As a matter of fact, Denny Gaughan, (Remember him?) and I will be going to the 42nd Gatornationals at Gainesville Fl Raceway, next Wednesday, March 9th.  I also attend local races at Palm Beach International Raceway and my favorite place, Immokalee Regional Raceway, over in Southwest Florida.

PS:  Yes, I was at Niagara, opening day, June 18 1961!

Many of you know that Niagara's golden anniversary is coming up June 18th.  In recognition of that fact and as I had on the previous forums, I will be identifying those people that were there by designating them as a, "Niagara Pioneer."  If someone feels they fit into that category, just let me know by replying to this post and I'll make the change in your profile.

Attention In The Pits / What is "The Tent?"
« on: March 03, 2011, 01:31:42 PM »
The Tent was the nickname for the late Western New York/Southern Ontario drag racing pioneer, Jadallah "Jerry" Hamam's shop on Lockport Road, just past Hyde Park Boulevard.

Jerry passed away in June 2001 and these forums are a tribute to the influence he had on this sport back in it's infancy.
